Solid potassium acetate. CH3COOK. CAS 127-08-2. White powder or granules, molecular weight 98.14. It's what you get when acetic acid meets potassium hydroxide — and it's quietly become the go-to for two very specific, very demanding jobs: keeping airport runways ice-free without wrecking them, and formulating drilling fluids that won't land operators in environmental hot water.
It sucks moisture from the air — seriously deliquescent — and dissolves at 235 g per 100 mL at 20°C. No chlorides anywhere in the molecule. That's the whole point.
Specs: 99.0% minimum for industrial grade, 99.5% for technical grade. A 5% solution lands between pH 7.5 and 9.0. Density: 1.57 g/cm³, melts at 292°C. For context, this stuff is way less aggressive on concrete, steel, and aluminum than any chloride salt you can name. And when it's done? It biodegrades completely — fully biodegradable, no persistent residue in soil or water.
On the runway, it melts ice down to -30°C without the structural carnage that sodium chloride or calcium chloride leave behind. Downhole, it works as a weighting agent and shale inhibitor in drilling and completion fluids — high-density brine, zero solids, minimal formation damage.
Other places it turns up: leather chrome tanning as a masking acid, textile dyeing as a buffer, food processing as E261 preservative and acidity regulator, polyurethane foam production as a catalyst, and even Class K fire extinguishers.
Packaging: 25 kg moisture-proof woven bags with PE inner liners, 1000 kg FIBC jumbo bags, or custom configurations for export. The moisture-proof part matters — this stuff clumps if exposed.
FAQ:
Runway-grade vs industrial — what's different? Runway-grade runs tighter on impurities and particle size. Industrial grade handles most other applications fine.
How to prevent clumping? Moisture-proof bags, stored dry. Once open, use it promptly.
Container loading? About 22–24 MT per 20-footer, depending on pallet configuration.
