- Product Description
Leather Chemicals Sodium Formate - Premium Tanning Agent for Strong Leather Processing
SHANXI ZHAOYI CHEMICAL CO., LTD. has been producing chemicals since 1988. That works out to more than 35 years of hands-on production experience. Our production base covers 27,000 ㎡ and follows a standardized layout. Every year it turns out 150,000 tons of acetate series products. Tanners around the world rely on our reliableLeather Chemicals Sodium Formate (CAS 141-53-7, HCOONa) for their processing work. The powder is white and crystalline. You can get it in two purity grades, 95% and 98%. Iron content stays very low, below 50ppm on the standard grade and 5ppm on the premium grade. We developed this product for chrome tanning processes. Acid shock is a common headache in tanning production, and this grade handles it. Tanning agents no longer fix on the surface too early. Chemicals spread evenly into thick hides. Finished automotive leather and upholstery leather come out with a tight grain texture and strong tensile strength.

Key Features & Benefits
Strong buffering performance is what our this product does best. It holds the pH value steady through the whole basification stage of tanning. Sudden pH swings and spikes can damage the collagen fiber structure of the leather. This product keeps that from happening. Tanning reactions then run in a stable and controllable way.
Masking efficiency in chrome tanning runs high with this product. Formate ions bind with chromium components in the tanning liquor and build stable complex structures. The tanning system can then take on higher pH environments. Chromium does not precipitate out ahead of time. Chrome exhaustion rate goes up a lot. Less chromium is left behind in the wastewater, and tanneries carry lower overall pressure from environmental discharge.
This one is a white crystalline powder that pulls moisture out of the air. Water takes it up easily: 97g/100ml at 20°C. Molecular weight sits at 68.01 g/mol, and specific gravity is around 1.92. Any water-based leather processing solution dissolves it fast and completely. Performance stays steady at every stage of tanning.

How It Works
Formate ions can trade places with the sulfate ions held inside the chromium complexes during chrome tanning. That shifts how the tanning components sit together. The bond between the leather collagen and the chromium ends up much more stable.
Uneven tanning is a familiar headache in the trade, and so are raw centers in the hide. This product handles both. The tanning reaction slows down and holds at a steady rate. Layers of different thickness then take up the tanning agent evenly. So the whole hide is tanned before the surface sets.
In the pickling bath, this product evens out the osmotic pressure between the inside and the outside of the leather fibers. Too much osmotic pressure makes the grain layer swell with acid. That swelling does not happen here. The natural grain and the fiber elasticity of the leather stay protected, even in a complex chemical process.
Applications
Chrome Tanning for Heavy Bovine Hides: A good fit for shoe upper leather and automotive leather. Chromium spreads evenly through thick bovine hides. When the temperature shifts, chromium can drop out too early, and this product prevents that. Tanning quality stays steady overall.
Neutralization During Retanning: Built for high-end aniline leather. The pH rises slowly and evenly through the leather cross-section. Fatliquors and dyes travel deep into the hide instead of building up and fixing on the surface. Bicarbonate products neutralize fast, and this one holds up against that.
Pickling Bath Stabilization: Delicate sheepskin and special exotic leathers are both handled well here. The grain structure of the hide, Leather Chemicals Sodium Formate, stays intact. Acid swelling cannot do its damage. Elasticity of the leather fiber structure holds up through long continuous processing runs.
Dyeing Enhancement: A steady buffer lets dye go in evenly and spread through the hide. Color consistency across the leather improves as a result. Color difference defects get avoided. Softness and hand feel of the finished leather come out better too.

Certifications & Compliance
Our production workshop strictly operates in accordance with ISO quality management system standards, with complete production and quality control procedures. We have obtained valid KOSHER and HALAL certifications to meet the diversified compliance requirements of special leather processing markets.
All products are manufactured in strict accordance with HG/T 2-3000 industry quality standards. We strictly control chloride content in production to completely avoid salt bloom and surface speckle defects on finished leather, ensuring reliable finished product appearance.

Packaging Options
Standard 25kg paper bags are one option. The other is plastic woven bags with a PE moisture-proof liner inside. Either way, this two-layer packaging keeps outside moisture away from the product. No deliquescence or caking shows up during long-distance transport and storage.
We provide customized bulk packaging solutions for large-scale tannery enterprises. We can adjust packaging specifications and styles according to customers' automatic batching and feeding equipment to match on-site production processes.

Manufacturing Process
We adopt precise controlled crystallization technology for production, which stably controls product particle size distribution, ensuring rapid and uniform dissolution of Leather Chemicals Sodium Formate in various tanning solutions and adapting to different processing formula systems.
The whole production process is equipped with multi-point quality inspection links. Each batch of products will undergo strict tests including purity detection, iron content analysis, moisture measurement and insoluble substance filtration before delivery to ensure full compliance with customer usage standards.
Supported by a professional team of 60 employees and decades of fine chemical manufacturing experience, we implement standardized process control in all links, effectively reducing batch difference and ensuring stable and consistent product quality for long-term cooperative customers.
Why Choose Us
Founded in 1988, our factory has stable and mature leather chemical production technology and rich industry service experience. Our products are exported to Europe, America, Asia and other global markets, winning long-term recognition from numerous tannery enterprises with stable quality.
With a stable annual production capacity of 150,000 tons, we can fully meet the continuous material demand of large-scale tanning production lines, completely avoiding production suspension and delivery delays caused by material shortage.
Customers can pick from two main grades. The 95% standard grade keeps costs low for everyday processing of dark leather. Then there is the 98% high-purity premium grade. It suits white automotive leather made to high standards, and delicate leather work too. Each grade fits a different quality target and a different budget.
Our service approach rests on integrity. Win-win cooperation over the long term is the other part of it. Real production problems are what we set out to solve for customers. Steady supply of the product comes with that, along with professional technical support after the sale.

FAQ
Q: Why does the product cake up while in storage?
A: A1: The product is hygroscopic. It takes in moisture from the air. In humid environments, that absorbed moisture is the main cause of caking. We add professional anti-caking ingredients and use moisture-proof packaging. Store it below 30°C. Keep relative humidity under 60%. This gives the best storage result.
Q: Can sodium bicarbonate replace this product for tanning?
A: A2: Replacement is not recommended. Sodium bicarbonate features rapid basification, which easily causes leather surface hardening and case hardening. Our sodium formate has excellent masking performance, which can realize deep penetration of chrome agents before fixation to ensure uniform tanning.
Q: How does the product make the chrome exhaustion rate go up?
A: A3: In tanning liquor, it keeps chromium complexes stable. Under high pH conditions, that stops chrome from precipitating too early. Chrome utilization rate goes up a lot. Less chrome residue and less COD content end up in wastewater. Tanneries can then spend less on environmental treatment.
Q: Which grade should you use, 95% or 98% purity?
A: A4: For normal dark leather and everyday tanning work, the 95% standard grade keeps costs down. The 98% high-purity grade has very low iron. Use it for high-end white automotive leather and delicate leather. That way, staining defects stay away.
Q: How does it affect the grain quality of leather?
A: A5: The process works better with it. Acid swelling of the leather fibers is held back. Tanning agents fix slowly and evenly. Grain stays tight and flat. Finished leather has a smoother feel and a better overall texture.
